Attitude Towards Current Situation

Moshe Ben-Chaim

Just as Yaakov prepared on all fronts when fearing the worst from his rival and twin Esav, we must do the same today, and not merely rely in military might. If we are to have hope of success in Israel, we must follow the ideals for which Israel was initially given. As the Shema says, abandoning G-d will cause our exile from the land. This makes sense, as man's purpose is his recognition of his Creator, and the involvement in His Torah. By forsaking the sole purpose of our existence, existence means nothing.

Yes, it is essential that we fight for our land, that we pray to G-d for salvation. But more essential is to have a reason that G-d should answer us positively. More essential is that we teach our secular brethren - with patience and with reason - the tenets of Judaism. Teach them what they are fighting for, not a parcel of soil, but a secured habitation where we may freely practice G-d's beneficial principles. Principles which guide our morals and thoughts, our speech and behaviors.

The land is a means to our perfection as a nation. It is essential that we never lose sight of the true goal, not Israel, but the Torah.
